I’ve been in a bit of denial, let me explain. I know skincare is extremely important but I get lazy and think I can go without it but that’s not the case. Also, I went the longest time saying I had dry skin because I didn’t want to think of my skin as oily. But it wasn’t until many people, including a skincare store clerk to point out I have combination skin. To make matters worse, I have a lot of texture, redness, and occasional breakouts.
If you need big sister advice, don’t slack off on skincare no matter what. I’m basically fixing mistakes that I shouldn’t have had in the first place, which is frustrating. But I’m learning from my mistakes and sharing what I’m doing so you don’t make the same ones I did. Here’s the perfect skincare routine for combination skin.
I thought I could forgo cleanser and boy was I wrong. Cleanser serves a purpose and not all are created equal. I’m currently switching between two cleansers depending on my needs.
One I use is the Tatcha The Deep Cleanse cleanser. I use this regularly to cleanse my face and it leaves it feeling so clean and fresh. The second I use is Care Zone Acne Clarifying Foam Cleanser for the days when I get more breakouts. Since it is specifically for acne, I feel it gently cleanse my face and not leave it feeling harsh.
I like cleanser just because I know my face is clean but finding a cleanser that helps your struggles adds a boost.
Toner was the hardest thing for me to understand. I knew I needed it but I didn’t know how or why. Toner is important and it’s important to do your research on what would work best for your needs.
I’ve been using the Bioré Witch Hazel Pore Clarifying Toner since I have major pore issues and it has been decent. However, I recently started using the O HUI Miracle Moisture and it’s been amazing! A little does so much and I feel like it sinks into my face so well.
Serums are another thing I’m slowly trying to figure out. For me, it feels like one of those fancy things in a routine. Olay had previously sent me one of their Cooling Serum Stick and it’s super great because it’s easy to use. Since it’s a stick you just glide it on so it’s not a lot of work and you feel the cooling feeling. I feel like I need it since I don’t want to overstimulate my skin.
Since my skin is feeling all over the place, I need treatment badly. I have horrible blackheads and the occasional breakouts so I need something to specifically treat that. There are two products that I use but I don’t use them at the same time. I usually alternate between them when I feel my skin needs something different.
The Kate Somerville Liquid ExfoliKate(R) Triple Acid Resurfacing Treatment is great but definitely the more intense from the two. I only use this when I know my skin feels like it’s in a good state to use. You have to douse a cotton ball with the treatment and put on your face. It definitely does the trick but something to use only when needed.
The item I use more often is The INKEY List Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) Blemish + Blackhead Serum. Since blackheads are my worst issue, this is my go-to treatment. I never feel it tingly or harsh on my skin and I easily incorporate it into my routine.
I’m just going to say it, eye cream is expensive. As someone who always has bags under her eyes, it’s a necessity though. Honestly, I haven’t found one I really love. The one I have been using lately is the Kiehl’s Powerful-Strength Dark Circle Reducing Vitamin C Eye Serum and it’s probably the one I like so far. It’s not tacky or too strong that makes my eyes watery.
For the dry part of my face, moisturizer is a must. I’ve been using a Clinique moisturizer for a while now but picked up a Cellabel moisturizer that has been so helpful. It’s not heavy on my face and I feel like it does leave it moisturized for a lot longer.
My lips are one of my struggle areas because they’re so dry. I need everything possible to keep them nice. Lately, I’ve been using the LANEIGE Lip Sleeping Mask and it’s been great. They do have different flavors but I found that I really don’t notice them at all. Since you leave it on at night, it’s super easy to wipe off when I brush my teeth in the morning. It leaves them so soft.
I try to do a mask at least once a week. I’m a big fan of using the single use sheet masks but I did invest in some masks to keep around.
First, I got what is dubbed as the most painful mask. The Elizavecca Hell Pore Clean Up Mask is wild in the best way. Yes, it does hurt to pull off on the most sensitive parts of your face like around the eyes and cheeks. But this clings to everything and pulls everything out. My blackheads get pulled out and including any little hairs around my face.
The CAREZONE Deep Clean Gentle Peeling Gel is also a great mask to do as you rub around your face and it takes off all the dead skin on your face. I use this once a week to make sure my skin is perfected.
I’m really late to the sunscreen party and its terrible of me. Sunscreen is so important, especially if you don’t want your skin to be textured. I’m still trying out sunscreens but make sure you apply it everyday.
- Go to a skincare specific store: I like Sephora but going to a skincare specific store will help out more in terms of what they know. I went to a local Korean skincare shop and it was so helpful.
- Always look for a smaller version but don’t cheap out: Don’t just go for the cheapest item. Find smaller versions of the bigger items to try them out.
- Let things settle in first before applying something new on top: This was one of my mistakes because I tried to do everything at once but make sure every step settles in first before applying something new so each can do their designed purpose.
Hope this was helpful! Let me know if you have any questions in the comments.
