Staying Organized in College (Guest Post)

Hello everyone. My name is Shanice Singh and I blog over at Playground of Randomness ). Like the name says, POR is a collection of random blog posts from books and fashion to rants about college life. Today I am going to be sharing a few tips on staying organised in college.

Start Early– It’s easier to just stuff all your notes in a folder and forget about it than to sort them out. And in any case, who has time to sort them out? The only time my notes ever get sorted out is when I’m supposed to be studying for a test. Organisation is my form of procrastination. But three tests and many neat folders later, I’ve realised exactly how helpful this has become. I know exactly where my stuff are and I’m never losing them anymore. As soon as you start shopping for college supplies, invest in a few folders and make sure your stuff are placed in it according to subject.

Assign a space– Have a space allocated to all your stuff. Make sure your textbooks, books, stationary supplies, etc are all in this place and nowhere else. This makes it easier if you need something and you don’t get up to go looking(and end up on Facebook- hey maybe you left your eraser on someone’s wall. It happens all the time).

Be Colourful– Those little colourful sticky notes(the mini post-its if that’s what it’s called- I’m not too sure) are great for marking your place in a textbook or highlighting important parts of your notes. Speaking of which- highlighters are great for emphasising important information in your diary. Which leads me to my next point….

Keep a Diary-Not the one you kept as a kid with all the hearts around your crush’s name- an actual diary with assessments, due dates and homework all recorded in it. It is human nature to forget stuff so make sure you write down every single thing you need to do and every event you need to attend no matter how big or small.

Evernote– Evernote is a great way to keep track of all your notes in one simple place. Create a notebook for each subject and add your notes into it. You’ll never lose your notes again.

Back Up– Ok so I know this seems like I’m repeating myself(and judge me if you want to) but I have lost my drafts too many times. And while they may have been drafts of my next bestseller and not college notes, I refuse to allow the possibility of losing notes. If you write out your notes, type it out and store it In Evernote. If you type your notes, keep a copy of them on a USB stick. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Duplicate– Again, more of my paranoia but anyway- keep spares of your basic stationary such as pens, pencils and erasers. It is also a good idea if you have a set of stationary reserved for use at home so you don’t end up using/finishing the only pen you have for campus. Due First? Do First- A friend taught me this method and its pretty simple. Just make a list of things that you need in do in order of due date. Start working on them in that order. The idea is that because it is due first, you do it first and therefore you have more time for everything else. Of course things can get a bit wonky if what is due first is smaller than what’s due later but in that case the bigger assignment takes importance.
