Read or Dread: Why Not Me

You might remember Mindy Kaling from The Office. She wasn’t the main character but offered comedic support as Kelly. What you should also know is that she was a writer on the show. Meaning that some of your favorite moments on the show came from her brain. Mindy clearly has a funny bone and that should give you a hint of what to expect in her book.

I must admit that I didn’t read her first book, but I was completely excited to dig into Why Not Me? From its description, it’s exactly what you would expect Mindy to write. It’s like a best friend telling you her life and struggles and making you part of her world.

You definitely need to understand sarcasm because Mindy uses tons of it. From explaining her beauty routine and her meeting with the president, everything she writes is dripping with exaggeration, in a hilarious way. The book goes through Mindy’s thoughts and struggles and makes you realize how relatable she is. From trying to get her show running to finding love, Why Not Me? is basically a conversation that you would have with your friend about life. Although it’s entertaining as heck, Mindy does give deep advice about being at a disadvantage and how sometimes you have to fight for what you want.

Why Not Me? is such a fun read because it’s funny but Mindy also throws in some girl power that makes you believe that anything is possible. I definitely loved Mindy Kaling before this, but I feel like I respect her on a new level because the book had a lot of honesty and showed the other side of Hollywood. The tips and advice definitely balance out the comedic side of Mindy’s statements, so you can get a laugh and learn some valuable lessons. It’s a must read if you love these types of books.
