Read or Dread: Sandcastle Kings

I knew I wanted to read Sandcastle Kings from the moment I saw people talking about it. People may have different opinions of Rich Wilkerson, Jr. and his “celebrity” but I wasn’t curious about that. I genuinely wanted to read the book because of content, not because of who he is.

Sandcastle Kings is definitely a good solid book, but I struggled with it because it just didn’t keep my attention. Usually I can just read through it and get that antsy feeling to continue when I need to take a break, but with this I just had to push myself through it. Before I get more into my thoughts, let me brief you on what it’s about.

The gist of the book is basically about finding fulfillment in God and how our trust on material things or shaky bases basically mean we will find ourselves in an empty place. Rich tries to explain that we will never find spiritual fulfillment in today’s society that is so focused on things that aren’t God. To explain his point, Wilkerson uses different stories from the book of Luke and tells about how God is the only one that can give us all we need.

The book overall was great. It definitely gives those deep thoughts that just make you step back and see where God is in your life. It is really simple to follow and can appeal to Christians just starting to learn about God and those who need just a refresh in their lives. Although I did enjoy it and give it a 4 out of 5, I just think it wasn’t as captivating as I thought it would be. But I loved that it had many applications to our lives in current time.
