The Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of the biggest cinematic universes. With 22 movies in Phase 1-3 also known as the Infinity Saga, there’s a lot of movies to catch up on. Here’s a simple guide on how to watch Marvel movies in order. Since the movies were released at different times, it’s hard to piece together the order they’re supposed to go in. For example, Captain Marvel was released in 2019 but happens much earlier chronologically in the story. Here’s how to follow along to understand the bigger picture and reviews from each film. Happy watching!
MCU in Chronological Order
Captain America: The First Avenger – Captain America’s origin story. Kicking off the story lines we see how Steve Rodgers went from regular guy to the worthy one. It gives a brief introduction to the Tesseract which will become a big deal in the rest of the story. Rating: 6.5/10
Captain Marvel – Captain Marvel’s origin story. Released in 2019, this movie is based in the ’90s putting it higher chronologically. We see how Carol Danvers becomes a powerful being, the start of the Avengers Initiative, and more of the Tesseract. Rating: 6.5/10
Iron Man – Iron Man’s origin story. The movie that actually kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe. You won’t hear about Thanos or any stones. Instead, just see the story of Tony Stark struggling with what he can do and see him embody the suit. Rating: 7/10
Iron Man 2 – This movie kicks off a short time after the first. We see Tony having to deal with major internal struggles. We see the starts of War Machine and get introduced to Black Widow. It’s an action filled movie. Rating: 7.5/10
The Incredible Hulk – Hulk’s origin story. Edward Norton takes on the green guy in this one. It’s a decent watch if you enjoy a lot of action. It does show Hulk in all his power and what he can do. Rating: 6/10
Thor – Thor’s origin story. This movie looks at all Thor is and Asgard. It definitely just focuses on him and setting him up. But we do see Hawkeye and shield doing their thing. Rating: 6/20
The Avengers – The first Avengers movie. Their origin story if you will. Here we see our heroes and their reluctance to join together. But also realize how important they can be together. This movie also has the very important Battle of New York. Rating: 8/10
Thor: The Dark World – This movie is forgettable. I don’t remember the plot at all except the rehashed pieces in Endgame. If I go rewatch all the movies in order, I skip this one and it’s okay. Rating: 4/10
Guardians of the Galaxy – The Guardians’ origin story. This movie is good. It’s the comedic side of Marvel and showcases misfits trying to be better. This fully shows the capacity of space and Thanos. Rating: 8/10
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – Guardians movies are my favorite. The music is a perfect add on to the story. This movie dives deeper into each character and connects with the audience so well. Rating: 8/10
Iron Man 3 – Closing out Iron Man’s standalone movies is Iron Man 3. This movie dives deep into Tony’s struggles and realizing he’s not just his suit. It shows a lot of his personal growth and relationship with Pepper. Rating: 6/10Here's the handy guide watch all the Marvel movies in order! Click To Tweet
Captain America: The Winter Soldier – Captain America’s second standalone movie. The Winter Soldier definitely picks up the action. This movie shows what he’s capable of but also shows his deep weaknesses. Plus, we get to see his friendship with Black Widow grow. Rating: 8/10
Avengers: Age of Ultron – This is the movie that starts to ramp up what is to come for the Avengers. We see Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver introduced here. Age of Ultron does bring up the idea that the Avengers may be causing more trouble than solving it. Also, shows that maybe they can’t handle everything. Rating: 8/10
Ant-Man – Ant-Man’s origin story. Paul Rudd is a gem. This movie is on the funnier scale of things and is such a pallet cleanser. It’s the perfect movie to combat the grimness of the others. It’s such a fun movie. Rating: 7.5/10
Captain America: Civil War – This is where the gloves come off. It feels more like another Avengers movie because most of them make an appearance. Civil War looks at the possibility of the government limiting the Avengers after what happened in Age of Ultron. This divides them and sets the tone for Infinity War. Spider-Man gets introduced here. Rating: 9/10
Black Panther – Black Panther’s origin story. Here we see T’challa become the king of Wakanda while dealing with people taking vibranium. This movie shows that there are more powerful people out there. It’s full of action and has an amazing soundtrack. Rating: 9/10
Spider-Man: Homecoming – Spider-Man’s origin story. I’m biased since he’s my favorite superhero. Spider-Man is just a feel-good movie. Since he’s still in high school it shows him coming into who he is and dealing with his regular life as he keeps this secret. Another just fun movie to take a break from the dark chaos. Rating: 8.5/10
Doctor Strange – Doctor Strange’s origin story. Not everyone wants to be a hero and Doctor Strange is an example of that. He just wanted to get better and ended up taking on a role he never expected. It’s a decent movie showing his power. Rating: 7/10
Thor: Ragnarok – This movie redeemed Thor’s movies. Yes, it takes on a lighter approach and comedy but it works. Thor goes through a process that he’s more than just a god with a hammer. It’s also a visually pretty movie. Plus, it ends exactly where Infinity War picks up. Rating: 8/10
Ant-Man & the Wasp – People disregard Ant-Man easily but this movie sets up a lot of the solution in Endgame. Plus, it’s still really funny. It has a good amount of action scenes and brings the stories together to enter the last two of this saga. Rating: 8/10
Avengers: Infinity War – Strap in for Infinity War. Thanos acquiring most of the stones sets them up to fail. The team is split into Cap’s side and Tony’s side. Everyone is fighting to stop Thanos. But ultimately leads to a failure they didn’t expect. Rating: 9/10
Avengers: Endgame – Endgame picks up right after Infinity War and the heroes trying to make things right. The 3-hour movie has a lot going on with trying to solve the current problem and trying to wrap up everyone’s stories. It’s a rollercoaster and worth watching all the movies to get to here. Rating: 9/10
