I am an emotional eater. This was my excuse for everything. I ate everything and anything. When I decided to start my health journey, I thought working out would be the hardest part. I quickly learned that is not true. Food is one of the toughest hurdles to get over. Here’s how I cleaned up my eating habits. It’s not impossible but it’s definitely really hard. Here’s what worked for me.
It’s Not a Fight
This is the biggest issue. People always think it’s about cutting out all the good stuff and being miserable. I have a huge sweet tooth so I was freaking out. Whenever people think about diets, they think of all they will lose. It’s time to switch that mentality. I learned to find snacks that are still delicious but fit within my calorie count. It’s possible. Just go to Pinterest and you can find a way to make your favorite things. Don’t think that you’re losing good things to only eat a carrot. Make it work.
Don’t Think About Restricting
Kind of like above. Don’t see the negative and work with what you like. If one day you eat something “unhealthy” it’s not the end of the world. You can treat yourself it’s okay. What helped me a lot was focusing on eating well and buying dark chocolate and eating a few pieces that still kept me at bay.
Make it Fun
I go to Trader Joe’s and look through everything to see what’s good for me. I make a game out of it and try out things I normally wouldn’t. When I get home I get people from my family to do a taste test for fun to see what taste good or not. This helped weed out the stuff I don’t like but also shows me that there’s tons of food out there that is good, you just need to get out of the comfort zone.
Don’t get discouraged if you feel like you’re not doing enough. If you feel guilty, shake it off and restart. Food is a struggle but you learn as you go.
